Two Banners, One Azeroth: Choose Your Side
GamingThe Alliance and the Horde are the two great factions at the heart of World of Warcraft. Their rivalries, alliances, wars and cultural differences have shaped the history of Azeroth since the earliest Warcraft games.
When creating a character, the chosen race normally determines which faction that hero will represent. This decision influences the character’s cities, racial allies, introductory story, faction-specific quests and identity within the wider world.
The Alliance is built around cooperation between established kingdoms and civilizations. Its members often emphasize duty, justice, tradition, knowledge and the protection of their homelands.
Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei and Worgen are among the Alliance’s best-known peoples. The faction also includes Allied Races such as Void Elves, Lightforged Draenei, Dark Iron Dwarves, Kul Tiran Humans and Mechagnomes.
Stormwind serves as the Alliance’s most recognizable capital. Its streets, royal district, cathedral and harbor represent the political and military strength of the faction, but the Alliance is much larger than a single human kingdom.
The Horde began with the orcs, but its modern form became a coalition of peoples searching for survival, freedom and a place in a hostile world. Under Thrall, the Horde restored the orcs’ shamanic traditions and established a new homeland in Durotar.
Orcs, Tauren, Trolls, Forsaken, Blood Elves and Goblins form the foundation of the modern Horde. Allied Races such as Nightborne, Highmountain Tauren, Mag’har Orcs, Zandalari Trolls and Vulpera later strengthened its ranks.
Orgrimmar is the Horde’s central capital. Built in the harsh lands of Durotar, the city reflects the faction’s determination, military power and ability to survive under difficult conditions.
The Alliance and Horde should not be understood simply as good and evil. Both factions contain honorable heroes, dangerous extremists, peaceful communities and leaders whose decisions have caused enormous suffering.
The Alliance has fought to protect its kingdoms and restore lands destroyed by war. The Horde has defended peoples who were displaced, persecuted or struggling for survival. At the same time, both sides have committed actions that deepened hatred and created new conflicts.
Their rivalry has produced some of Warcraft’s most important events. The wars between humans and orcs established the foundation of the series, while later conflicts over territory, resources and political power repeatedly pushed Azeroth toward destruction.
Battle for Azeroth brought the faction war back to the center of the story. The burning of Teldrassil, the battle for Lordaeron and the campaigns in Kul Tiras and Zandalar demonstrated how quickly old hatred could become a global war.
Faction choice also changes the characters and cultures encountered during the adventure. Alliance players may serve beside figures such as Anduin Wrynn, Jaina Proudmoore and Tyrande Whisperwind, while Horde players may encounter Thrall, Baine Bloodhoof, Lor’themar Theron and other influential leaders.
In modern World of Warcraft, the faction divide is less restrictive than it once was. Alliance and Horde players can participate together in many organized activities, including selected dungeons, raids and rated PvP groups.
Cross-faction guilds also allow friends from opposite factions to share guild chat, progression and community features. However, faction identity still matters, and characters can remain unfriendly or hostile to one another in parts of the outdoor world, especially when War Mode is active.
New players should choose a faction based primarily on the races, cities, visual style and stories they enjoy. Class strength changes over time, but a strong connection to a character’s identity can make exploring Azeroth much more rewarding.
The Alliance offers grand kingdoms, ancient forests, advanced technology and powerful traditions. The Horde offers tribal cultures, hard-earned survival, spiritual heritage and communities built by peoples who refused to disappear.
Whichever banner a player chooses, both roads eventually lead into the same larger struggle: protecting Azeroth from enemies powerful enough to threaten every race, kingdom and faction.
